Is your horse arena looking a bit worse for wear? It’s not surprising that after a few years of use (and a few seasons of decent rain) you’ve got hard patches, soft patches, hoof divots that never quite fill back in, and that one corner that’s somehow always a bit boggy. Sound familiar?
Fortunately, though, you probably don’t need to rip it all up and start again.
We use a specialised power rake attachment to work on the existing surface of your arena. We can work on it to break up compaction, redistribute material that’s drifted to edges, and level the surface back out. In many cases, this can be done without bringing in new sand at all, which keeps the cost (and the disruption) well down compared to a full resurface.

Who we can help
We are able to work with everyone from backyard arenas to pony clubs and other equestrian grounds. If you’re a pony club committee trying to stretch a tight maintenance budget, this is exactly the kind of job that can make a real difference without blowing the annual fundraising. We also work with private owners, small agistment setups, and riding schools across the region. What’s actually involved
Every arena is a bit different. The depth of footing can vary, what it’s made of (sand, sand/fibre blends) can vary, how it’s drained, how long it’s been since it was last done and so on. So we’ll usually offer to come out, have a look, and talk through what we think will get the best result for your situation. We’ll be upfront if we think your horse arena needs something more than a rake can fix (sometimes drainage or base issues need a different approach, and we’d rather tell you that than pretend otherwise).
For most arenas though, a session with the power rake brings the surface back to a genuinely useable, more consistent state – better levelled, fewer divots, less of that “patchy” feeling underfoot.
Why bother with maintenance instead of a full rebuild?
A few reasons, really:
- It’s a fraction of the cost of a full resurface or rebuild
- Far less downtime – you’re not out of action for weeks
- It extends the life of the footing you’ve already paid for
- It’s a great “first step” – if maintenance doesn’t get you the result you need, at least you’ll know that before spending big on a rebuild
A few honest notes
We don’t want to oversell this. Results depend on what’s actually going on with your equestrian arena – how compacted it is, what it’s made of, what the base and drainage are doing underneath. Some arenas come back looking brand new. Others need a bit more than a rake to really sort out (and we’ll tell you if that’s the case). Either way, it’s worth having a chat before assuming you need to start from scratch.

Do I need to buy or hire any equipment myself?
No — we bring our own power rake attachment and do the work for you. You don’t need to own or hire anything.
Will this work on my type of arena?
The power rake works well on sand and sand/fibre arenas. If you’ve got a different surface type, or you’re not sure what you’ve got, just get in touch and we can talk it through.
How often should an arena be maintained like this?
It depends on usage, weather, and how the arena was built in the first place. Some arenas benefit from this once or twice a year, others less often. Happy to give you a rough guide once we’ve seen yours.
Do you service pony clubs as well as private arenas?
Yes. We regularly work with pony clubs and community equestrian groups across the Lockyer Valley, Somerset Region and western Brisbane area, as well as private owners.
What if my arena needs more than maintenance?
We’ll tell you. If we think the base, drainage, or footing depth needs proper attention beyond what the rake can achieve, we’ll let you know rather than just doing a quick job and leaving you with the same problem in six months.
